Why September Is the Right Time to Update Your Athletic Recruiting Profile

College coaches are actively searching profiles right now. If yours has outdated stats, old film, or missing academic info, you are losing ground to athletes who updated theirs.

Why September Is the Right Time to Update Your Athletic Recruiting Profile

College coaches are not waiting for you to reach out. They are actively searching recruiting databases, reviewing profiles, and building their boards right now. If your profile still shows last year's stats, a highlight video from spring, or an outdated GPA, you are invisible to coaches who are making decisions today.

September is the single best time to refresh your recruiting profile. Here is what needs to change and why it matters.

Update Your Athletic Stats and Measurements

Your numbers from last season are a starting point, not a final answer. Coaches want to see where you are right now — your current height, weight, speed, and position-specific metrics.

If you have been tested recently, update every measurement. If you have not been tested since spring, schedule a combine or use your school's resources to get current numbers before the end of September. A player who has grown two inches or dropped 0.2 seconds in their 40 time since last year needs to show that.

Do not leave outdated numbers on your profile. A coach who sees a measurement that does not match what they observe on film will question your credibility.

Replace Old Film with Current Footage

This is the most important update you can make. Coaches evaluating September recruits want to see September-level play, not a highlight reel from 14 months ago.

Pull your best clips from the first two weeks of your fall season. Prioritize footage that shows athleticism, decision-making under pressure, and competitive situations. A two-minute highlight video with current footage is more valuable than a five-minute video from last year.

If you do not have game film yet, record your next practice or scrimmage. Something current is always better than something old.

Refresh Your Academic Information

Your GPA, class rank, and standardized test scores are part of your recruiting profile. Coaches use academic information to determine eligibility, scholarship potential, and fit with their institution's admission standards.

Update your GPA to reflect your most recent semester. If you have taken the SAT or ACT since your last profile update, add those scores. If you are planning to test this fall, note that on your profile so coaches know updated scores are coming.

Strong academics expand your options. Make sure your profile reflects the work you have put in.

Add Your Fall Schedule

Coaches who are interested in you want to know where you are playing. Add your complete fall game schedule to your profile, including dates, locations, and tournament names.

This serves two purposes. First, it gives coaches who are already watching you the information they need to attend. Second, it signals that you are active, organized, and serious about the process.

Update Your Contact Information and Graduation Year

This sounds basic, but it matters. Coaches who try to reach you through an old email address or phone number will move on. Confirm that your contact information is current and that your graduation year is clearly displayed.

If you have changed your primary email or phone number since creating your profile, update it immediately.

Review Your Personal Statement or Bio

Many recruiting profiles include a short personal statement or bio. If yours was written a year ago, it may no longer reflect where you are as an athlete or a student.

Rewrite it to reflect your current goals, your most recent accomplishments, and what you are looking for in a college program. Keep it concise — three to five sentences — and make sure it sounds like you, not a template.

Set a Reminder to Update Monthly

A recruiting profile is not a one-time task. The athletes who get noticed are the ones who keep their information current throughout the season.

Set a calendar reminder for the first of every month to review and update your profile. After each significant game or tournament, add new footage. After each grading period, update your GPA. Consistency over time is what separates organized recruits from the ones coaches cannot track.
