Questions to Ask on Every Official Visit

You have worked for years to earn an official visit. You have 48 hours on campus. Most athletes spend that time being impressed by facilities and enjoying the experience — and leave without the information they actually need to make a great decision.

Do not make that mistake.

The official visit is your opportunity to evaluate the program just as much as they are evaluating you. Come prepared with real questions. The answers will tell you everything.

Questions to Ask the Head Coach

The head coach sets the culture. These questions reveal whether their vision aligns with yours.

1. What does your program's development plan look like for a player at my position?

This tells you whether they have a specific vision for your growth or are just filling a roster spot.

2. What are your expectations for freshmen in terms of playing time?

Be realistic. Understand where you fit in the depth chart and what you need to do to earn time.

3. How do you handle conflicts between athletes and coaching staff?

This reveals the communication culture. A coach who dismisses the question is telling you something important.

4. What has happened to the last three athletes who transferred out of your program?

Transfer rates are a real indicator of program health. A coach who gets defensive about this question is a red flag.

5. Where do you see this program in five years?

You want to know if the program is growing, stable, or declining — and whether the coach has a long-term vision.

Questions to Ask Assistant Coaches

Assistant coaches are often more candid than head coaches. They are also the ones you will work with most directly.

6. What does a typical week look like during the season — practice schedule, film, travel?

Get the real picture of the time commitment, not the polished version.

7. How does the coaching staff communicate with athletes about performance and development?

You want to know if feedback is regular, honest, and constructive.

8. What do athletes who succeed here have in common?

This tells you what the staff actually values — and whether you fit that profile.

Questions to Ask Current Players (Without Coaches Present)

This is the most important part of your visit. Request time with players without coaches in the room. Any program that will not allow this is hiding something.

9. What do you wish you had known before committing here?

This question cuts through the recruiting pitch and gets to honest reflection.

10. How does the coaching staff treat athletes when things are not going well?

Culture shows up under pressure. Find out what that looks like here.

11. What is the team culture like? Do athletes hang out outside of practice?

You will spend four years with these people. Make sure you actually like them.

12. How is the academic support? Do athletes actually use it?

Academic support exists at every school on paper. Find out if it is actually effective and accessible.

13. What is the biggest challenge about being a student-athlete here?

Every program has challenges. You want to know what they are before you commit.

14. If you could do it over, would you choose this school again?

The answer — and the hesitation before the answer — tells you a lot.

Questions to Ask Academic Advisors

15. What is the graduation rate for athletes in my intended major?

This is a real accountability metric. Programs that prioritize academics will know this number.

16. How are class conflicts with practice and travel handled?

Missing class for away games is a reality. Find out how the school supports athletes through it.

17. What resources are available for athletes who are struggling academically?

You want tutoring, study halls, and advisor access — not just a promise that "we take academics seriously."

Questions to Ask Yourself After the Visit

18. Did I feel comfortable asking questions, or did I feel like I had to perform the whole time?

The best programs make recruits feel like people, not prospects.

19. Could I see myself living here for four years — not just visiting?

The campus looks great on a recruiting visit. Picture it on a rainy Tuesday in February.

20. Does this feel right?

Trust your gut. You have done the research. Now listen to your instincts.

How to Use These Questions

Do not try to ask all 20 in one visit. Prioritize based on what matters most to you. Write down the answers — you will not remember everything after the adrenaline of the visit wears off.

Compare your notes across schools. The program that gives you the best answers to the questions that matter most to you is probably the right fit.

The official visit is not just a recruiting tool for coaches. It is your best chance to make one of the most important decisions of your life with real information.

Use it wisely.
