The Official Visit: What to Expect and How to Make the Most of It

Getting an official visit invitation is a big deal. It means a program is serious about you — serious enough to spend money on your travel, housing, and meals. But it's also a two-way evaluation. You're deciding if this program is right for you just as much as they're deciding if you're right for them.

Here's how to make the most of it.

What Is an Official Visit?

An official visit (OV) is a campus visit paid for by the school. Under NCAA rules, Division I schools can pay for transportation, lodging, meals, and entertainment for you and your parents or legal guardians.

You're allowed 5 official visits total across all schools. Use them wisely.

Unofficial visits are visits you pay for yourself. These are great for early research, but official visits signal serious mutual interest.

What Happens During an Official Visit?

Every program runs their OV differently, but most follow a similar structure:

Day 1 (Arrival)

  • Arrival and check-in
  • Dinner with coaches and current players
  • Evening activities (team bonding, campus tour)

Day 2 (The Main Event)

  • Morning: Meeting with the head coach (this is the most important conversation of the visit)
  • Academic tour: Meeting with academic advisors, seeing the athletic study hall
  • Facility tour: Weight room, locker room, practice facility, stadium
  • Lunch with position coach and current players
  • Afternoon: Free time with player hosts
  • Evening: Dinner with the full coaching staff

Day 3 (Departure)

  • Final meeting with coaches
  • Any remaining questions
  • Departure

Questions to Ask the Head Coach

This is your chance to get real answers. Don't waste it on surface-level questions. Ask things that actually matter to your decision:

About your role:

  • "Where do you see me fitting into your program in year one? Year two?"
  • "What would I need to do to earn playing time as a freshman?"
  • "How many players are you recruiting at my position this cycle?"

About the program:

  • "What's your coaching philosophy? How do you develop players?"
  • "What do your players who've gone on to play professionally have in common?"
  • "What's the culture like in the locker room?"

About academics:

  • "What academic support is available to athletes?"
  • "What's the graduation rate for athletes in my sport?"
  • "How do you handle conflicts between practice and class schedules?"

About the offer:

  • "Is this scholarship renewable? Under what conditions could it be reduced or revoked?"
  • "What does the full cost of attendance look like after my scholarship?"

Questions to Ask Current Players (Without Coaches Present)

Your player host will take you around campus without coaches. This is your chance to get the unfiltered truth. Ask:

  • "What do you wish you knew before you committed here?"
  • "How does the coaching staff treat players who are injured or going through a rough patch?"
  • "What's the social life like? Do athletes integrate with the rest of campus?"
  • "If you could do it over, would you choose this school again?"

Listen carefully. Pay attention to what they don't say as much as what they do.

What to Observe Beyond the Conversations

The visit is designed to impress you. Look past the polish:

  • How do coaches treat support staff? The way a coach talks to the equipment manager or janitor tells you everything about their character.
  • How do players interact with each other? Is there genuine camaraderie, or does it feel forced?
  • What's the facility really like? Not the showroom — the everyday spaces. The training room. The film room. The locker room on a Tuesday.
  • How do you feel on campus? Can you see yourself here for four years?

After the Visit: How to Evaluate Your Options

Give yourself 48 hours after each visit before making any decisions. The excitement of a great visit can cloud your judgment.

Then ask yourself:

  1. Did the coaches seem genuinely interested in me as a person, not just as an athlete?
  2. Can I see myself thriving academically here?
  3. Did the current players seem happy?
  4. Does the program's style of play fit my strengths?
  5. What does my gut say?

The right school isn't always the most prestigious one. It's the one where you'll develop the most, be the happiest, and set yourself up for life after sports.

The Bottom Line

An official visit is one of the most exciting experiences in the recruiting process. Prepare for it like you prepare for a big game — know your material, ask smart questions, and trust your instincts.

For the complete official visit playbook — what to ask, what to observe, and how to compare schools after — read the Official Visits Guide. And if you're still in the earlier stages, the Unofficial Visits Guide covers how to use those visits to build relationships before the official invite comes.

Make it count.
