NIL Deals: What Every College Recruit Needs to Know

The college sports landscape changed forever on July 1, 2021. That was the day the NCAA officially allowed student-athletes to profit from their Name, Image, and Likeness — commonly known as NIL.

If you are currently being recruited, NIL is no longer a bonus. It is a core part of the conversation. Understanding how it works could be worth thousands — or even hundreds of thousands — of dollars over your college career.

Here is everything you need to know.

What NIL Actually Means

NIL stands for Name, Image, and Likeness. In plain terms, it means you can now get paid for:

  • Endorsement deals with brands and local businesses
  • Social media sponsorships and paid posts
  • Autograph signings and personal appearances
  • Merchandise featuring your name or likeness
  • Camps and clinics where you teach your sport
  • Podcasts, YouTube channels, and other content creation

Before 2021, any of these activities would have cost you your eligibility. Now they are fully legal — and coaches, schools, and collectives are actively using NIL to recruit top talent.

How Schools Use NIL in Recruiting

Here is something important to understand: schools themselves cannot directly pay you NIL money. The NCAA still prohibits "pay for play" arrangements where a school compensates you directly for athletic performance.

What has changed is the rise of NIL collectives — booster-funded organizations that operate independently of the university. These collectives pool money from alumni and fans and then connect athletes with NIL deals.

When a coach says "our collective can take care of you," they are referring to this system. The deals are technically with outside businesses or the collective itself, not the school — but the school's boosters are often funding it.

What to Ask During Your Recruiting Visit

When NIL comes up during your official visit, here are the right questions to ask:

  1. Does your school have an active NIL collective?
  2. What is the average NIL deal value for athletes in my sport?
  3. Do you have a dedicated NIL coordinator or advisor?
  4. What brands or local businesses are typically involved?
  5. Are there academic or GPA requirements to maintain NIL deals?

Do not be shy about asking these questions. Every major program expects them now.

Your NIL Value: What Determines It

Not every athlete commands the same NIL value. Several factors influence what you can earn:

Social Media Following

This is the single biggest driver of NIL value for most athletes. A wide receiver with 50,000 Instagram followers is worth far more to a brand than one with 500. Start building your following now — before you ever step on a college campus.

Platform priorities:

  • Instagram: Highest brand demand for college athletes
  • TikTok: Fastest-growing, especially for younger demographics
  • Twitter/X: Important for sports commentary and personality
  • YouTube: Best for long-form content and camps/clinics

Sport and Position

Revenue-generating sports — football and men's basketball — typically command the highest NIL deals. But do not count yourself out if you play a non-revenue sport. Gymnastics, swimming, and volleyball athletes with strong social followings have landed major deals.

Market Size

Playing in a large media market or for a school with a massive fan base increases your NIL potential. A backup linebacker at Alabama may earn more than a starter at a smaller program simply because of the brand exposure.

Performance and Playing Time

Brands want athletes who are visible. Starters and stars earn more. But even walk-ons and role players can build NIL income through niche audiences and local business deals.

Building Your NIL Brand Before College

The best time to start building your NIL brand is right now — during the recruiting process. Here is how:

Clean Up Your Social Media

Coaches and brands both look at your social media. Remove anything that could be seen as a red flag. This includes:

  • Posts with alcohol or drug references
  • Controversial political statements
  • Negative comments about coaches, teammates, or opponents
  • Anything that contradicts the image you want to project

Start Creating Content

You do not need a massive following to start. Post consistently about your sport, your training, your recruiting journey, and your personality. Authenticity wins on social media.

Content ideas for recruits:

  • Training clips and workout videos
  • Behind-the-scenes of your recruiting visits
  • Game highlights and post-game reactions
  • Academic life and study routines
  • Community service and off-field interests

Engage With Your Audience

Respond to comments. Follow back fans. Engage with other athletes. The algorithm rewards engagement, and brands look at engagement rate — not just follower count.

NIL Collectives: What You Need to Know

NIL collectives vary wildly in size, structure, and reliability. Before you factor a collective's promises into your college decision, do your homework.

Questions to Research

  • How long has the collective been operating? Newer collectives may not have a track record.
  • Is it financially stable? Some collectives have made promises they could not keep.
  • What is the deal structure? One-time payment? Monthly retainer? Performance-based?
  • Are deals in writing? Always get NIL agreements in writing, reviewed by an advisor.

Get an NIL Advisor

If you are being recruited at a high level, consider working with an NIL advisor or agent. They can help you:

  • Evaluate the legitimacy of collective offers
  • Negotiate deal terms
  • Understand tax implications (yes, NIL income is taxable)
  • Build a long-term brand strategy

Many sports agencies now have dedicated NIL divisions. Some work on commission; others charge flat fees.

Tax Implications: Do Not Get Caught Off Guard

This is the part most recruits overlook. NIL income is taxable. It is treated as self-employment income by the IRS, which means:

  • You owe federal income tax on all NIL earnings
  • You may owe state income tax depending on where your school is located
  • You are responsible for self-employment tax (Social Security and Medicare)
  • You should be making quarterly estimated tax payments if you earn significant NIL income

Talk to a tax professional before you start earning NIL money. The last thing you want is a surprise tax bill at the end of your freshman year.

NIL and the Transfer Portal

NIL has fundamentally changed how the transfer portal works. Athletes now transfer not just for playing time or fit — but for better NIL opportunities.

If you are considering transferring at any point in your college career, understand that your NIL value travels with you. A strong personal brand gives you leverage in the portal that pure athletic ability alone does not.

The Bottom Line

NIL is a real, significant part of the college recruiting equation. The athletes who maximize their NIL value are the ones who:

  1. Start building their brand early — before they ever sign
  2. Ask the right questions during the recruiting process
  3. Understand the difference between school promises and collective commitments
  4. Get agreements in writing and work with qualified advisors
  5. Treat NIL income like a business — because it is one

The recruiting process is about finding the right fit athletically, academically, and financially. NIL is now a legitimate part of that financial picture. Use it wisely.
